Summary

Start with a modem that is supported in Linux (that is, not a winmodem) and you will have a good chance of getting that modem to dial out and connect to a remote modem. With a supported modem in hand, the Network Configuration window can make it simple to set up a dial-up connection. If that doesn't work, there are log files you can monitor and commands such as minicom you can run to try different modem settings.
